Fairly Legal Fic: Black and White 1/1

February 24th, 2011 (07:16 am)

Title: Black and White

Disclaimer: Not mine.

A/N: Simple character musing with a background that will invariably become AU. Set preseries, though I couldn't tell you just how far :) Much thanks to sendintheklowns  for beta'ing, because she is simply far nicer to me than I really deserve.

Summary: Kate can see the world in shades of gray, but it's still all black and white to Justin.

Justin can make the case against a life with Kate Reed.

She's always late. It's a perpetual thing for her. Time in Kate's mind is fluid and irrelevant. She's so preoccupied with living every second that she doesn't take the time to count out how the seconds add up into a much bigger picture. Sometimes she shows up five minutes overdue; sometimes it's hours before she shows up with a smile and an apology and an explanation that somehow always makes sense.

She's rebellious. This is possibly what first attracted him to Kate, but as time goes on, he understands that despite that allure, it doesn't make for any kind of stability. She'll pick fights not to be cruel, but just to make him think. She believes that playing devil's advocate is necessary and that no answer is ever solid. Kate asks more questions than a three year old asking why in unending succession. Sometimes she sees a boundary and wants to test it just to see if it's really half as important as people seem to think it is.

The fact that she's usually right doesn't always make it better.

She never accepts a simple answer. There's never a simple yes or no with Kate. There's maybes and what ifs. Every offer she gets is merely a basis for negotiation, and there's always a deeper reason she feels compelled to uncover. If he wants Chinese food, she argues for Thai, and they end up eating sushi because she just wants to see how far they can get before it all falls apart. She wants everything in shades of gray, which means she's always willing to give a little (but never ready to give everything).

Her family is complicated. Kate loves her dad, and it's easy to see why. But her brother runs hot and cold and it's hard to tell where his priorities really are. Her stepmother is easy enough to understand, but Kate won't let him like her, not even a little. All things in Kate's life are negotiable, except that much.

Kate's unpredictable. She's difficult. She's afraid of legal contracts because she knows all the caveats and implications. She practices a law she wants to subvert and she resents a system that her whole family works for. She's thoughtful and forgetful in equal turns, and sometimes that breaks his way (and sometimes it doesn't).

She drives him crazy. She thinks she's always right. Even when she's trying to find wiggle room for herself, she says it's for the greater good. Kate wants to help people she hardly knows and thinks that their problems can be assessed and divided, no further questions asked.

Ever since he's met her, Justin has tried to talk himself out of it. He tries to tell himself he'll be better off with someone else, that Kate's just not ready even if she happens to say that she is. He knows all the facts point to someone getting their heart broken, and Justin is pretty sure that that heart will probably be his.

Because he can make the case against a life with her. But she already won his heart, a long time ago. In the end, there's no argument, no negotiation, no maybes, no questions. He loves Kate and Kate can see the world in shades of gray, but it's still all black and white to Justin.

He loves her. In the end, that decides everything.

So he'll play it her way. He'll have a list of the reasons why they should get married. He'll give her the concessions she needs to feel like this is a good deal. And he'll have the ring in a box in case he can convince her to love him like this after all.

Aww, very sweet. Wonderful introspection here, and I think you have Kate (through Justin's eyes) nailed perfectly. Wonderful job!

and very nicely done, too. That totally feels like Justin - going into it with his eyes wide open to the differences/challenges, but willing to do it anyway.

Sometimes fic just demands to be written, and I've had these characters in my head for a few weeks now, so I had to go there :) Even if for a short jaunt.

I'm really fascinated by the Justin/Kate thing and I'm eager to see what their canon backstory in more detail.
