H50 Ficlet: If Anything 1/1

November 30th, 2010 (01:31 pm)

Title:  If Anything

Disclaimer:  Not mine

A/N:  This is the latest of my drabble series for hawaii_5_0_100 .  The prompt this week was jellyfish, which threw me for a moment, and then I sat down and wrote this :)  I’m not sure how many more fics will come after this one, but I’m going to let my muse run its course and I don’t think it has quite yet :)  And if anyone has any requests for what they'd like to see, I'm open to that, too.  Much thanks to moogsthewriter  for the beta--her comments really helped with the clarity and impact.  Also thanks go geminigrl11  for one last read, even jetlagged as she was.

Summary:  Steve’s had his eyes on the prize for so long that he never saw the simple dangers that lurked just beneath the surface.

When Steve was eleven, he got stung by a jellyfish.  He hadn’t seen it; hadn’t even been paying attention while going long up the coastline to catch a pass.  His sister’s throw was off, and when he banked into the water to catch it, his foot snagged on something.

He went down immediately, his foot stinging.  By the time he hit the sand, his entire leg was throbbing and there was a buzzing in his ears.  Somewhere, the water was washing over him and his sister was yelling at him, but Steve couldn’t focus enough to do anything about it.  He was floating, not quite peaceful but unable to fight, and by the time he came to his senses, he was tucked up in bed back at home on the stern end of a lecture from his father about watching what he was doing.

“You can’t take your safety for granted,” he’d said, and his jaw was clenched but Steve could tell it was more with worry than anger.  “If anything happened to you...”

He never finished the statement.  Steve promised himself that his father would never have to find out.

But even the best planned life has complications, and Steve’s more than two decades older when Hesse comes out of nowhere and kills his father.

It’s not even six months later when his pursuit of vengeance cloaked in justice gets his partner shot.

Thing is, Steve never saw it coming.  He’s so set on the end goal, so determined to make right what has gone wrong.  Nothing will stop him from accomplishing this task, and Steve hardly cares what peril he faces as long as the goals are good.

This is what he tells himself.  This is how he counters Danny’s tirades to be careful.  This is how he justifies the risks he takes.  He knows what he’s doing.  He’s done worse before.  He understands the peril.

But seeing Danny go down, seeing the blood on the floor and his body splayed limply on the warehouse floor--

It’s an unexpected sting, like stepping on a jellyfish in the shallow surf.  He’s had his eyes on the prize for so long that he never saw the simple dangers that lurked just beneath the surface.

Steve’s floating--for hours, days--not quite peaceful but unable to fight, and by the time he comes to his senses, he’s seated in a hospital chair on the stern end of a lecture from Danny about watching what he’s doing.

“You can’t take your safety for granted,” Danny says, and his voice is still raw, his hand gestures weak.  He doesn’t seem to care that he’s the one in the hospital bed, that Steve didn’t even get scratched.  The doctors say there will be a long recovery ahead, but Danny’s been working up to this rant all day.  “If anything happened to you...”

Steve grins, feels the sensation come back to his body, and promises that neither of them will ever have to find out.

Only Danny would read the riot act to Steve for not taking care of his own security when he's the one who almost died...

Loved this!

I really enjoyed this story and you know that I especially loved this part:

But seeing Danny go down, seeing the blood on the floor and his body splayed limply on the warehouse floor--

It’s an unexpected sting, like stepping on a jellyfish in the shallow surf. He’s had his eyes on the prize for so long that he never saw the simple dangers that lurked just beneath the surface.

Happy Birthday in advance. Hope you have a great day tomorrow!

Re: Loved this!
danny and steve work together

I keep meaning to email you but life seems to get away from me! It doesn't help that there was Thanksgiving in there and then I actually ended up with the flu on my birthday, but I'm getting it back together now :)

Anyway, thanks for commenting! Your readership always makes me smile.

Hi Faye,

I loved this ficlet featuring Steve. I can so see Steve being so focused and Danny would so rant at Steve even while in a hospital bed. Thank you for this fantastic set of interconnecting stoies which are fabulous. Thank you for making my happy island even happier with this tales.

Faye, may you also have a Happy Birthday full of love, laughter, fun, friendship and happiness today and all the rest of the year.

The Hawaii Five 0 team also wanted to wish you a happy birthday. :)

Happy Birthday Faye

take care
hugs
Angela

I love your H50 fics where there's limpage everywhere! I still need to catch up until episode 9 though, I'm on the 7th I think.

I like the series but it's hasn't become an obsession for me yet.

I've recently gotten into the BBC Merlin and that's become an obsession ;P

First, Merlin is made of WIN. Have you seen the season finale yet? Epic!

I adore Merlin beyond words, but I will admit, I find it rather hard to write fic for. For me, my plot bunnies are nearly completely overwhelmed by H50 at the minute :)

Though I don't rule out Merlin fic--I have a few snippets written but not posted and who knows?

Thanks!

Isn't it? I'm really loving it and yes, I've seen the season finale which was fantastic!

I hear you on the fanfic aspect especially since it seems to be overrun by the slash crowd. But I'm not complaining since I really love your H50 fics :D and I can wait and be patient for those snippets!

This part: "vengeance cloaked in justice" was just so beyond words completely Steve. Also, I love that you included his father in this one. : ) Two more to read!

Steve's determination is his greatest strength and his greatest limitation, I think. It makes him interesting to write about. Thanks!
