Title: The Haircut

Verse: Second Life

Disclaimer: I do not own Primeval. Or feral Stephen.

A/N: Next in The Continuing Adventures of Feral Stephen: a haircut. Much thanks to lena7142 who beta’ed this and who came up with feral Stephen in the first place.

Summary: It’s time for Stephen to face the scissors.

-o-

Stephen was alive and healthy and back in the present. To Cutter, that was a victory. However, even he could see that something had to be done about the younger man’s somewhat unorthodox appearance.

His skin was deeply tanned, his distinctive scars thick white lines across his body. This made his blue eyes seem brighter, offset by his darker coloration. He was lean with sinewy muscles and he walked just slightly differently, with careful padding steps more befitting a predator than a modern man.

Connor had already expressed concern regarding Stephen’s lack of clothing, but Cutter’s attempts to address that issue had been steadily rebuffed and ignored. While dressing the man did seem to be important, Cutter figured working his way up slowly might be the best approach, especially when there were still other areas to contend with.

Such as the issue of his hair. Stephen had consented to trim his beard, actually seeming somewhat relieved to finally have actual scissors and an electric razor to make the task simpler. But when it came to his jagged, sun-streaked locks, he seemed a bit more reticent.

“Just let me even it up a bit,” Cutter offered, innocently holding up a pair of scissors.

Stephen narrowed his eyes at him. This wasn’t an uncommon look for Stephen. He had the keen sense of a predator, and sometimes when he focused, he had a truly primal way about him. It wasn’t that Cutter didn’t trust Stephen -- the other man had saved his life multiple times and had shown true gratitude for being brought back to the present -- but Cutter did wonder just what Stephen’s instincts compelled him to do and how much control his rational brain had in such instances.

At the moment, it was entirely possible that Stephen was just responding sceptically to the suggestions as he had every other suggestion for common sense and decorum since he’d got back. But still, with Stephen’s intense blue eyes zeroed in, Cutter got the uncomfortable impression that the other man was considering the ways to disarm Cutter of the scissors and use them against him like a weapon. The thought was unsettling, particularly because Stephen would be fully capable of it, and Cutter wouldn’t know what hit him before the scissors were deeply embedded in his chest.

Making a face, Cutter meekly pulled the scissors back a bit.

Stephen growled. “Fine.”

Some time later, Stephen was perched stiffly on a chair. Cutter had tried to cover him with a towel but the other man had given him such a look that Cutter had agreed to let him get the trim without it. Since he wasn’t wearing a shirt, it wasn’t a particularly pressing issue anyway. Cutting with the scissors had made Stephen glower, but when Cutter switched on the electric trimmers to fine tune things a bit, Stephen had tensed so hard that Cutter thought he’d snap.

But finally, when Cutter was done, Stephen had reasonably shorn locks. Nothing fancy, of course, but even and neat, short enough to look acceptable in the working world while still long enough to give him a ragged edge that would keep him in his comfort zone.

Stephen looked in the mirror Cutter provided and frowned.

Cutter worried. “You don’t like it?”

Stephen reached up tentatively, feeling it. “It makes me feel naked without it,” he muttered.

At that, Cutter laughed. “You’ve spent years walking around in a loincloth and this makes you feel naked!”

Stephen put down the mirror just slightly and looked up at Cutter with a deadly gaze.

Cutter hemmed back his laughter. “Yes,” he amended quickly. “I can see how it might feel that way.”

Lifting the mirror again, Stephen gave himself another critical look. “I’ll have to trim it all the time to keep it like this,” he said. “It’s inefficient.”

“It’s not so bad,” Cutter cajoled. “You’ll get used to it.”

Stephen put the mirror down, sulking.

“People will love it,” Cutter added helpfully.

Stephen glared at him.

Cutter brushed off his trousers, setting about to get the broom and clean up. “Just go with it for a day or two,” he said. “Give it a chance before you try to kill me over it.”

With a grunt, Stephen stalked away.

Cutter watched him, broom in hand. Haircut: accomplished. Tomorrow they’d tackle the issue of clothing.

Over in the other room, Stephen was still fondling his hair with a disdainful look. He glanced over at Cutter, eyes dark with discontent. It was disconcerting how Stephen was able to portray such deadly intent from a look alone.

It was one of the many quirks Cutter was still getting used to. But Stephen would come around. The man was nothing if not adaptable. They’d be on to wearing clothes and eating off plates in no time.

With that in mind, Cutter set about his work, sweeping up the hair.

Looking up again, he noticed Stephen had gone. To some, this might seem unsettling since Stephen had slipped away without a hint of sound or the faintest rustling of movement. But Stephen was prone to such things, and often disappeared from plain sight when Cutter no more than turned his head. The first few times, it had led to a vast manhunt. Now Cutter merely waited until Stephen turned up -- usually with just as much stealth, appearing without a sound to scare the shite out of Cutter when he least expected it.

All in all, it wasn’t much cause for concern, no matter how sulky Stephen had been about his hair.

But then Cutter noticed that his scissors were missing, too, their position on the tabletop suspiciously vacant. Pausing, Cutter listened in the stillness for any sign of Stephen.

There was only stillness.

He had probably just gone to his room. Maybe he’d actually went to the bathroom for once. Or he could just be relaxing somewhere, trying to acclimate himself to the other modern perks he’d missed out on in the last decade. Stephen was angry like a pouting child, but Stephen wouldn’t actually hurt him over a haircut.

Would he?

Uneasily, Cutter went back to his work, feeling somewhat conspicuous from his vulnerable position, armed only with a broom.

The haircut was enough. Maybe the clothes could wait until next week.

LOL - Cutter the wuss ;) Though Stephen's either playing a mind game with him for revenge, or borrowing the scissors to rough up his hair a bit.

Love Stephen being so determined to do things his way, and the banter about him feeling naked!

Well, feral Stephen is pretty intimidating :)

And after so many years on his own, I'm sure Stephen has a lot to relearn.

Thanks!

This is brilliant. I adore feral!Stephen, and Cutter's reactions to him disappearing are classic. Perfect last lines!

So funny - Stephen being happy to run around in a loincloth, but feeling naked with no hair. Maybe because he was hiding his expressions behind it?

And disappearing with the offending scissors was super. Was he hoping that there weren't any more? *g*
