Primeval drabble: Shooting at Air

Title: Shooting at Air

Disclaimer: I really don’t own Primeval.

A/N: Written for the prompt pteranadon for primeval100. Based on ep 1.05.

Summary: Cutter always makes things sound so easy – teaching and research and Helen – but Stephen’s the one who finds himself doing the work.

-o-

The pteranodon is massive. It flies gracefully, catching the lilting wind as it dances around the rooftops. Stephen’s a damn good shot, but no matter how clearly he sees it, he can’t get his aim to steady long enough.

Cutter chides him, and Stephen grouses. Cutter always makes things sound so easy – teaching and research and Helen – but Stephen’s the one who finds himself doing the work.

Sometimes Stephen feels like all he’s doing is chasing after Cutter, trying to hit a moving target. Every time he gets close, Cutter veers off, Helen returns, and Stephen’s shooting at the air.

Great take!

This is a great take on what Stephen was thinking as he was trying to hit the pteranodon. I LOVE this scene on the face value of how capable a hunter Stephen is that despite Cutter's jibe, he settles in, calms himself and figures out how to zero in on it even as Cutter screams at him to shoot it. James did a great job of showing off Stephen's cool and deliberate dedication as a hunter. It brings to mind how when it came to his personal life, Stephen couldn't see through the forest for the trees and yet he can shoot a flying target out of the air. Quite a comparison.

Re: Great take!

I really do love Stephen when he's capable. He was always willing to go off on his own, even when he wasn't sure what he was facing. And I loved that even as Nick was pestering him in this scene, he was able to get the job done.

And poor Stephen. I think Helen was his one weakness and she knew it and used it to her every advantage. It makes me ache for him!

Thanks!

stephen goodbye

LOL, I don't know whether to apologize or be flattered :) Probably both. It's safe to say I'm a diehard Stephen apologist by this point, though, so I'm always glad to make his behavior a little more sensible.

Thanks!
