Snagged from leoraine, posted to keep myself accountable more than anything.

Post the first sentence (or three) from every WIP you're currently working on, even if it's very short. Then invite people to ask questions about your WIPs. With any luck, you'll get talking about writing, and the motivation to take that WIP one step closer to completion will appear as if by magic!

Primeval

1. Clone!Stephen

In the end, there’s no decision left to make.

The world is ravaged; Helen’s manipulation of the anomalies has proliferated. The question of telling the public is moot now, not with the rifts opening constantly.

2. Fix-it

When Connor has been trapped in the past for nearly eight months, he starts to let himself wonder how his life might be different if he hadn’t chased after Nick Cutter with news of a monster in the Forest of Dean.

3. Chaos/Primeval

Stephen couldn’t quite remember what happened.

He remembered just about everything else, but he couldn’t remember that.

4. Helen/Nick preseries

Helen breathes out, looking over the lab. Her eyes are focused, critical; it’s a look Nick has come to know well, from their late nights in the lab together to their mornings in bed. This is Helen when she’s coming alive, when she’s coming into herself, and there’s magic not in what she sees, but in how she sees it.

5. Teamfic, S2

“I think we’re lost,” Connor announced.

It felt rather like stating the obvious, but Connor was never opposed to giving voice to even the most simplistic thoughts in his mind. And, to his mind, there was really no way around the fact that they were increasingly not approaching their destination despite every seeming attempt made to the contrary.

6. Stephen character study

The funny thing is, he doesn’t love her in the beginning.

Chaos

1. Billy goes undercover as an actor

Billy couldn’t help himself. Olivia was on the bed, sprawled on her stomach, face propped up on her hand as she looked at the manuscript in front of her.

2. Rick and Billy get tortured

Rick is almost beyond panting when he gets there. His chest aches and he can barely feel his legs. Michael catches him by his arm as he staggers through the doorway, and he blinks up at him, almost too surprised to know what to say.

3. H50/Chaos

“Now why can’t we have more cases like this?” Billy asks.

Rick quirks an eyebrow and looks at him. The Scot looks entirely comfortable, lounging in a beach chair with his toes buried in the sand. He’s got on a pair of swim trunks and his button up Hawaiian printed shirt is open to the sun.

3. Billy in a bar fight

Billy is a good drinker.

True, this isn’t a skill that many would put on their resume, though it has certain relevance to a spy in the field. After all, the ability to drink heartily and still retain total control of one’s faculties has certain perks. It’s also saved his life more than once.

4. The SNAFU in Madagascar

Billy runs.

Running’s never been his sport of choice; if he has his druthers, he’d take a game of football any day of the week and twice on Sundays. It’s not so much a question of physical endurance as it is mental focus, and Billy’s never preferred that much of a solitary activity for such an extended period of time if he can help it.

5. Casey learns never to mumble a prayer

Strategically, it’s the best option.

Violence has gotten worse throughout the city over the last few days, and after a few rounds of shelling from the factions, there’s really not much left standing. Many of the homes and businesses are nothing more than rubble, long since abandoned by local civilians.

6. Michael, Casey, Billy, post-Simms

It’s over.

Missions start and missions end; this is the way of things at the CIA. Some endings are smoother than others; some never seem to end at all.

7. Billy gets sick

It started with a sneeze.

Michael was honed and trained, fully committed to tracing every detail. He considered this a necessity to his job, to ensure his own survival and the well being of his team.

8. Character reflections

The way Rick wants to die isn’t so much about the details, but the aftermath. He’s always accepted, from the time he was very young, that peril and/or death are ready consequences of a life in service of the CIA.

A&E

AU 4.01

This was not the first impression Danny had wanted to make.

From bungling his meeting with Robert to having Amanda show up with his lunch, this day was an out and out disaster.

And that was before he’d gotten taken hostage while treating a patient.

Gilmore Girls

Part of the redemptive!Dean verse

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Please?”

Luke scowled more deeply, his mouth flattening into a frown. “I said no.”

North Square

1. Post series continuation

It was late.

That was the point, of course, of working the night shift. It wasn’t a duty Officer Andrew Bennett enjoyed, but it was a necessary one. He was young, after all, and without much experience to back him up, he always drew the short straw when it came to assignments.

2. Morag/Johnny Boy resolution

Morag was a smart girl. Good student, too. She was bright and receptive, eager to learn and quick to listen. This made her the ideal pupil all her life. She always passed her classes with glowing marks, and had been at the top of her class all her life. Teachers loved her, and on paper, she looked most impressive.

3. Johnny Boy introspection

It’s something he’s proud of.

In truth, there hasn’t been much of that in Johnny Boy’s life. He knows he’s the dimwit child in a family of winners, and he’d have to be a git not to understand that his aspirations in life are somewhat limited.

Suits

random Mike h/c

The case is on his desk when he gets to work.

It’s a thick stack of papers, paper clipped and stapled. The note on top is clearly written in Donna’s hand: Read, review, and attack.

Merlin

tag to Dragonlord

As with most things in Merlin’s life, euphoria was merely a matter of perspective.

After all, the immediate sensation of becoming a dragon lord, sharing that connection with his father--was a euphoria that was hard to contain. More so that he had in fact managed to right his wrong, to vanquish the dragon he himself let loose.

SPN

1. S1 kidnapped!Sam

“I don’t see why we can’t just work every now and then.”

Dean rolled his eyes. “We do work, Sammy. You don’t have to wear a tie and sit an office from nine to five to work.”

2. Baby!Sam

Sam was an accident from the beginning.

John had never been convinced he wanted a second child--not when Dean was so perfect. He heard other fathers talk about their fussy, difficult children and knew he had something special in Dean.

Twilight

1. Five times Seth phased

It starts with a fever. Seth’s always been a bit prone to getting sick, something about all that wet weather, his mother used to tell him, but this fever is different. It doesn’t just settle on his head, leaving him tired and achy, but seems to surge from the inside out, starting a fire in his very soul and consuming him until there is nothing left.

2. The wolves deal with no enemy to fight

“Wow, just when I think we can’t get any less evolved,” Leah said with a shake of her head.

Jacob grinned at her, keeping his grip on Quil’s arm steady. The limb was extended beyond its limits, twisted behind his friend’s back, and Jacob braced himself against Quil’s bucking.

3. Post BD continuation

The thing about the tribe was that, well, it was the tribe. All in all, Jacob was fine with most of it. The traditions could seem a bit tiresome at times, but the made a whole lot more sense now that he knew they had some basis in reality.

H50

1. Blind!Danny series

It’s dark.

Way past regular hours, but somehow they don’t make overtime. Danny’s on call, twenty-four seven, and in the world of 5-0, that actually means a whole lot more than Danny wants it to.

2. H50/Oceans, co-written with moogsthewriter

Danny hated Hawaii.

This was not news, but it was still a pressing issue on his mind. Pressing like the sun on his back and the sand in his socks and the never-ending laid back vibe that told him just to take it easy, brah.

3. Danny’s past comes back to haunt him, written with moogsthewriter

He’s alone.

His body aches and it hurts to breathe. Every pull in and out is effort, punctuating the loneliness only to remind him that he’s alone.

Cutting It

continuinig the series

The Henshall-Ferraday Salon had always been somewhat chaotic. With clients in and out, this was to be expected, but against the added backdrop of friends and family, it always had an extra climactic air, with drama and joy sprinkled throughout any given work day.

Chuck

S4, team/mission fic

The thing with being a super spy was that it was, well...super.

True, that was a bit redundant, but there wasn’t exactly a better way to phrase it. He got to go on missions, travel the world, play with some of the coolest gadgets he’d ever seen. He had a cover and had access to a top secret CIA facility.

Firefly

Between the series and the movie

As far as plans went, this one was about as good as any. Mal wasn’t picky about things like that. He just wanted something that would keep them safe, would keep them off the radar, and would make them money. This one had the potential to meet all three, so that really was good enough for him.

Psych

1. Shawn has an out of body experience

1989

It was sort of like breathing underwater.

At least, what Shawn imagined breathing underwater might like. Sort of light and heavy all at once.

2. Tag to S4 finale

Shawn Spencer: psychic detective, awesome hair, one time member of the Abba Fan Club.

Also, less impressively, a coward.

Social Network

set post movie

Of all place, Mark hears about it on Facebook.

Really, this is social networking at its best. Mark doesn’t run with the same crowds as he did back in college, but as the head of Facebook, he’s still got a number of them on his friends list.

Greenwood

set post movie/book

Sometimes, Fancy wonders.

She sits at the window in their small house and stares out across the field and thinks about the confines of her life. She’s free to roam to the horizon--Dick has never been one to keep her on a leash--but her entire life is still confined to these narrow roads and alleys.

Yes, you do have just a few on the go ;)

////Billy goes undercover as an actor////

That would be a great job for Billykins!

////And that was before he’d gotten taken hostage while treating a patient.////

LOL. Good point.

////Dick has never been one to keep her on a leash--but her entire life is still confined to these narrow roads and alleys.////

Oh dear. Hopefully stupendous sex and living with such a gorgeous man would make up for that??

Will see what writing I can manage to do this weekend...

Yes, you do have just a few on the go ;)

Some are quite old but mostly my brain really can't stop plotting. Every time I tell myself to stop thinking up new fics, I think up about three more that I just have to write. So you can imagine the state of my mental well being with all that.

That would be a great job for Billykins!

That one is actually in rough draft form; I just need to get the darn thing revised. But I'm particularly happy with it because I got to use my extensive knowledge of Romeo and Juliet, which always makes me incredibly happy.

Oh dear. Hopefully stupendous sex and living with such a gorgeous man would make up for that??

LOL! You would definitely think. She comes to see the error of her pining by the end of the fic. At least, that's the goal of the fic, assuming I ever get back to it. If I could carve out enough time to rewatch the movie, it'd be a big help!

Will see what writing I can manage to do this weekend...

Best of luck to you! I do look forward to the fruits of your labors!

////So you can imagine the state of my mental well being with all that.////

*nods* My brain isn't happy unless plots are running through it (and occasionally colliding and melding together). And if you don't keep writing them up, you're going to be buried under the weight of them!

////I got to use my extensive knowledge of Romeo and Juliet, which always makes me incredibly happy.////

Sounds fascinating - I very much look forward to that one. Put it at the top of your revision list!

////If I could carve out enough time to rewatch the movie, it'd be a big help!////

Buffed up, topless, wet JM
Period clothing JM looking mighty fine
JM chopping wood
JM with a cute accent
JM gets the girl
JM's character doesn't die
What are you waiting for???

I'm glad that Fancy manages to find an even keel at the end ;)

////Best of luck to you! I do look forward to the fruits of your labors!////

Thanks - I've been making progress on several fics. I want to do a big writing push during this next week, while I've still got free time. Might as well make the most of it.

My brain isn't happy unless plots are running through it (and occasionally colliding and melding together). And if you don't keep writing them up, you're going to be buried under the weight of them!

That's exactly it :) Sometimes I think the only time my life actually makes sense is when I'm writing.

Sounds fascinating - I very much look forward to that one. Put it at the top of your revision list!

I will see what I can do :)

What are you waiting for???

Time in which I can watch without a three year old going, "Mama, who's that? What's he doing? I like your show!" for the entire duration. It's too hard to watch JM and still maintain parenting duties because JM is truly that distracting.

When my youngest is finally old enough to be babysat, one of my primary desires is to have a day or even an afternoon alone where I can just be in a quiet room by myself and write nonstop. Right now I'm still a ways off, but someday...

So all I can say is, write, write! Use your free time well :)

Six Stephens Series

////Sometimes I think the only time my life actually makes sense is when I'm writing.////

*nods emphatically* That's when we're making the universe make sense/bend to our will too.

////I will see what I can do :)////

*sets up camp and waits*

LOL.

I'm amazed that you get so much writing done as is! I don't have kids but I still wonder how the heck I manage to waste so much time and not get writing done... (Am determined to have a big burst of keyboard tapping today.)

Good luck achieving your desires - but until you can, you can take even more pride in achieving a story, knowing how you managed to get it out despite all the odds :)

Hee. Will do!

*nods emphatically* That's when we're making the universe make sense/bend to our will too.

Heh. I think there's a lot of truth to this. I have so little control over most aspects of my life that the self determination of writing is liberating. It's nice to be able to tell a character to do something and have them obey!

*sets up camp and waits*

Your anticipation is fairly motivating, actually :)

I'm amazed that you get so much writing done as is! I don't have kids but I still wonder how the heck I manage to waste so much time and not get writing done...

It wasn't until I didn't have free time that I realized just how much of a commodity it was. And so by consequence, I use my snippets of time really efficiently these days. If I'm not doing something motherly or hanging out with my husband, I'm doing something with writing (or fandom at large).

(I'm beginning to realize how boring I probably sound!)

(Am determined to have a big burst of keyboard tapping today.)

LOL. You’ve got more of a social life than me! I love taking train trips and appointments at the hairdressers because that’s good writing time.

Haven’t been able to have a big writing burst yet, but am making steady progress.

Yes, though sometimes they don’t…

Indeed. Like when I sit down to write a nice, short one shot and end up with a 50k monstrosity against my will.

*frantically starts waving pom-poms*

Hopefully today! If I can get my act together, anyway.

LOL. You’ve got more of a social life than me! I love taking train trips and appointments at the hairdressers because that’s good writing time.

See, you actually get out of the house! There are some weeks when I barely get to step outside because the notion of dragging the two kids out is just more than I want to deal with!

Haven’t been able to have a big writing burst yet, but am making steady progress.

Steady is good :) I'll take steady.

Wow. Imposant number of fics! And I love all of your openings, they're awesome!

I esp liked these:

Chaos - number 3, Billy in a bar fight, number 5, Casey learns never to mumble a prayer (I just lolled at that), number 7 - Billy gets sick (isn't that always fun? Aaand, poor Michael).

SUITS! You write Suits, and it's Mike h/c and I can't even.... I so want to see that fic alive:-)

Both Psych fics look great, though the last sentence from number two packs a punch!

I don't know the other fandoms, but still, nice openings:-)

I can see there's so many wips around (not just for you and me)... it would be nice to finish some of them, lol. Maybe do a challenge where every week you have to choose one wip and write an exact word count? Hmmmm...

Posted by: do i dare or do i dare? (faye_dartmouth)
Posted at: January 28th, 2012 01:24 pm (UTC)

I worry about the Suits fic because I wrote it with very minimal knowledge of the characters. Like literally, I've only seen two episodes of that show and I wrote the fic at the request of a friend. She's told me that the characters work well enough but I always get a little nervous about posting in new fandoms, especially when I lack familiarity.

I'm hoping that by listing my WIPs alone will help me finish more of them. In the past, I've tended to just lose track of what I have going but if I remind myself that I have all these fics sitting around, maybe I'll finish them.

Of course, then my muse keeps coming up with other things to write, so it's probably all wishful thinking on my part :)
