Chaos ficlet: Training Day 1/1

Title:  Training Day

Disclaimer:  Not mine.

A/N:   eviinsanemonkey  wanted training time with Casey Malick.  Hopefully this is close enough.  It might be a little OOC, but yeah :)

Summary:  You want Casey on your team but you never want to be under his authority during a training exercise.

Rick doesn’t make it two steps out of the elevator before he’s being grabbed by the arm and hauled against his will down a hallway in the opposite direction of his office.

This isn’t as unusual as it should be for Rick, but it’s still an effort to keep a hold of his coffee without dropping his bag.

By the time he gets his wits about him, Billy’s hand is tight on his forearm as he guides Rick through the busy hallways, casting nervous glances over his back.

Rick’s first instinct is to protest.

But Rick knows never to trust his first instinct.

Rick’s second instinct is to pull away.

But Rick has learned that his second instinct is usually not much better than his first when it comes to the ODS.

So Rick contemplates the situation for another moment, watching as Billy herds him down another corridor past the counterfeiting office and noticing how the taller man ducks his head as he charges by.

“Are we hiding from someone?” Rick finally dares to ask, keeping the question more playful than accusatory.

Billy’s face doesn’t show much humor as he takes another sharp turn, pushing Rick along in front of him.

“Did you poison someone’s breakfast again?” Rick asks.  “Get caught planting a listening device in the women’s restroom?”

These are said as jokes, but Rick’s actually kind of serious.  Because Billy acts weird most of the time--but this is weird weird, even for Billy.

Billy just scowls.  “Hush up,” he whispers.  “I’m doing you a favor.”

The answer isn’t what Rick expects.  He frowns and is going to protest in earnest now when Billy takes a tight left, opens a door, and shoves Rick unceremoniously inside.

Rick stumbles and barely catches himself on a metal shelf.  When the door closes, Billy turns on the light and Rick realizes they’re in a storage closet, surrounded by office supplies.

Billy locks the door and when he turns around, he is breathing slightly heavy.  He pins Rick with an unusually piercing stare.  “First, I prefer to think of it as an immunity building agent,” he says.  “And second, I have planted bugs in both the men’s and the women’s restrooms, but purely for sanctioned security purposes.”

Rick blinks at him.

Billy shrugs.  “Well, mostly sanctioned,” he amends.

“And how does this justify shoving me in a close against my will?” Rick asks.

Billy shifts closer to him, looking furtive now.  He lowers his voice, as if he’s really concerned someone might be able to hear them while they’re stuffed into the tiny space.  “If you knew what was in store for you at the office, then you would be thanking me right now.”

Rick shakes his head.  “I don’t understand--”

“Today is one of Casey’s so-called training days,” Billy reminds him.

“Yeah,” Rick says, because this point was told to him multiple times yesterday.  “So--”

Billy’s eyebrows shoot up.  “Have you ever trained with Casey Malick?”

Rick shakes his head and starts to answer, but he doesn’t get far.

Billy’s eyes are wide and strangely sincere.  “The man is a trained genius, no doubt, with the self control that would make Mother Theresa look foolish and unrestrained,” he says.  “Which is why you want him on your team but you never--and I do mean never--want to be under his authority during a training exercise.”

Rick shrugs.  “I can see him being a little harsh--”

“Harsh?” Billy asks, incredulous.  “The man is downright terrifying.  He makes dictators look like pushovers.  Your mind, body, and soul will never be the same after enduring his unyielding tutelage.”

“It can’t be that bad,” Rick says.

Billy’s look stops him.  “To train under him is to submit to his extreme wiles, for better or for worse,” he says.  “You may gain the most valuable fighting skills of your life, but you’ll sacrifice more than a wee bit of your soul to get it.”

“Come on--”

Suddenly there’s a knock at the door.  Billy goes stiff, his entire body stilling immediately.

“I know you’re in there,” Casey’s voice comes.  “And I know you have Rick in there with you.”

Billy shakes his head, silently begging Rick to say nothing.

Rick is torn.

Casey knocks again, trying the handle.  “I can kick this door down, but then that will make me mad,” he says.  “Do you want me to be mad during our training today?”

Billy shakes his head again, more insistently.

Rick sighs and rolls his eyes, side stepping Billy to unlock the door.

Outside, Casey is standing, looking rather unimpressed.

For a second, Rick’s going to tell Casey the truth.  It seems like the right thing to do.  But something in Casey’s countenance makes him reconsider.  “We were just...looking for some extra copy paper,” he lies, nodding toward the closet.  He tries to smile.  “Found it.”

Billy hasn’t moved from inside the closet.

Casey looks at Rick then looks at Billy.  “You shouldn’t try to protect him,” he says, eyes fixed on Billy.

Billy is still resolved.  “He’s too young, Casey,” he says, shaking his head.  “His youthful innocence deserves to be maintained, at least for a few more months.”

“He needs the training, just as much as you do,” Casey tells him tersely.  “Or should I remind you about your performance in Belgium?”

Billy’s mouth drops open.  “It was five on one!” he protests.  “And they were armed!”

“No excuses,” Casey snaps.  “I have full authority from Michael and Higgins.  Double time it back to the office or there will be consequences.”

Billy’s expression falls further and his shoulders slump.  He shakes his head, moping his way past Rick.  “I’m sorry, lad,” he says as he passes.  “I did try.”

Rick watches Billy go with a twinge of sympathy.

Casey turns his attention to Rick.  “Don’t think because your wide-eyed puppy routine has won over a softy like Collins that you’re going to get any leeway from me,” he says.  “By the end of the day, you will understand what differentiates the ODS from the rest of the CIA.”

Rick nods because it actually sounds kind of reasonable.

Then Casey leans forward.  “And don’t think there won’t be consequences for cavorting with Collins,” he warns.

Rick frowns.  “He took me against my will.”

“Only because you abdicated your will,” Casey says sharply.

Rick’s mouth is open but he doesn’t get the chance to speak.

“No excuses,” Casey tells him bluntly.  “Now, back to the office before I decide to make your day even worse than I had planned already.”

Casey’s always been somewhat intense in his attitudes and extreme in his methods.  Rick has accepted this as part of his personality and usually perceives it as an asset in the field when composure is a must.

But there’s something different when it’s direct at him with such virulence and force.  Suddenly, Rick is almost too afraid to move.

“Now!” Casey barks.

Rick yelps and starts moving, thinking that maybe Billy wasn’t just talking nonsense this time.

LOL, you should go for it. Because the dynamic totally wins.

(The perils and/or wonders of drunk!Billy. And someday I'll have a non-Billy prompt, I promise.)

Posted at: July 13th, 2011 09:02 pm (UTC)

It does!

(hee, I don't mind Billy prompts. And this one shall be fun and possibly slightly slashy, but I'll try to keep it light)

I love looking at our icons together.Billy's totally like "hey, you handsome devil!"

And that's totally what he would do, too. And that still makes me want to write Billy meeting Stephen just for exactly that response. And poor Stephen just wanting SOMETHING to be normal in his life.

Posted at: July 13th, 2011 09:25 pm (UTC)

You should totally write it :)

Stephen's reaction would be hilarious, ngl. He'd be like "Oh, god, no..." and Billy'd just be like "Drinks! We have to get drinks!"

stephen skeptical

I really may have to. If I could just stop writing so many things at once, I might be able to get it started sooner rather than later. It's that whole peril of real life again. Why doesn't the world understand that I NEED to sit down and write about Stephen angsting about an alternative version of himself somehow getting lose and Billy being totally overjoyed at the thought of two of him?

And now I'm debating if it should be a chance encounter in a public place or if perhaps the ARC team picks up Billy when he gets too close to an anomaly site and starts worrying that he may be one of Helen's clones.

I like the ARC team idea 'cause everyone's reactions would be so, so awesome

Glorious! :D

I need more James Murray in my life...
Maybe I should go watch the Keen Eddie ep he's in...

stephen's eyes

I have found myself in constant need of more James Murray in my life.

And seriously, don't get me started on his ep of Keen Eddie because then I'll want to fic that, too. (Though, I still need to watch more of the series to get a handle of the characters, but any time I devote to watching things is time I'm not writing so it's always a catch-22.)

more James Murray is never a bad thing :)

I've watched the whole Show so many times. i love it. I actually forgot he was in it and was trying to figure out why Stephen looked so familiar...

happy james

I would certainly never disagree with that :)

And I found the show because of James Murray so my focus was first to watch that ep but I did like the overall feel and characters so I really do want to watch the entire thing.

Well, since I already plotted it and wrote something of an ending, I'm saying that it looks likely. Now I just need time to write more.

I imagine Casey would be both brilliant and difficult as an instructor. I have a feeling Rick would be in over his head pretty quickly :)

Protective!Billy is rather endearing :) And yeah, training in general is misery and with Casey as the instructor, I can't even imagine.
