Chaos ficlet: Unconventional Training Methods

Title:  Unconventional Training Methods

Disclaimer:  Not mine.

A/N:  eviinsanemonkey  asked for Casey and a bat’leth.  So yeah, it’s all her fault :)  And nope, this isn’t even remotely beta’ed.

Summary:  Casey trains the team in a new combat technique much to Rick’s chagrin.

-o-

“I don’t see how this is going to be relevant to anything we do in the field,” Rick says.  It’s the same complaint he’s voiced five times now, though he’s tried to frame it differently each time.

It doesn’t matter.  Casey’s response is frustratingly the same.  He glares, hard and plaintive, which makes Rick feel mad and stupid all at once.

“You never know what fighting techniques your opponent might employ,” Casey lectures, talking to Rick as if he’s five.

It doesn’t help that Michael is standing impassively, and Billy is nodding along in sage agreement.  They’re all in sweats in one of the CIA’s training rooms but Rick feels like he's the only one doing any work.

Rick gapes a little and feels helpless.  “But this isn’t even a real fighting technique,” he protests, trying not to sound petulant.

Casey brings up his weapon and Rick has to scramble to bring up his own in self defense.  “The basis of its origin is not relevant,” Casey says, the blade glinting dangerously close to Rick’s neck.  “Its capacity to destroy and/or incapacitate is.”

Rick licks his lips, swallowing and trying not to appear nervous.  “It just seems...I don’t know,” Rick says, hedgingly.  “Silly?”

Casey’s eyes gleam.  “It’s a noble and effective means of combat,” he says, pushing the blade ever so slightly closer.  “There is a lot you could learn from that culture.”

Rick nods and tries to look serious.  “I’m sure,” he says.  “But I was too busy studying real self defense and actual languages to bother catching up on my pop culture references.”

Casey eases up fractionally, eyes still narrowed.

Rick extracts himself and looks back at Michael and Billy for some kind of support.  “I mean, a bat’leth?  Star Trek?  Really?” he asks, hoping that for the first time his team might show a shred of logic and reason.

Billy shrugs.  “I have learned not to be discriminating against techniques that may possibly save my life someday,” he says.  “You have to admit, it’s an approach few opponents will see coming.”

Casey looks a little smug.

“Besides,” Michael says, picking up his own weapon.  “The CIA requires so many hours of official training each year.  Either we complete Casey’s course in Futuristic Hand-to-Hand Combat or sit through Blank’s session on the Fine Art of Deadly Ninja Combat.”

While the thought of Blank trying to be a ninja is sort of amusing, Rick can only imagine the long and interminable hours under such tutelage.

Resolved, he lifts up his blade.  “Okay,” he says.  “So where do we start?”

Casey circles him.  “Always here,” he says, “on the battlefield, asking yourself one question: is today a good day to die?”

With no further preamble, Casey lunges at him and Rick scrambles for some kind of defense as their training begins.

The fun thing for me about it is that while it's obviously crack-y, I can actually see Casey doing this.

(How about you go ahead and try the Chaos/Star Trek crossover? Unless it's plottier in your head, but I don't see the need to inundate you with excessive bunnies :)

(I think the Star Trek thing is going to wind up being one of those brain eating lengthy ideas my mind likes to have, so if you'd like to request a different prompt that'd be fine)

(LOL, I don't want your brain to self destruct over a prompt :) Ummm, how about Billy's birthday?)

(lol, it's not so much self destructing as the fic's gonna take awhile to get right - lots of planning...it even has a plot. Hee, this shall be fun!)

(Plots can be evil. I'll be quite happy with Billy's birthday :) I'm pretty easy to please.)

(it's true! but also fun...and this one shall be interesting. It's about Angst-ridden Half-Vulcan Space Ship Captain Michael Dorset and his rag tag crew of, well, basically of misfits...so, yeah.

hee, hopefully Billy's birthday will stay fluffy like it is in my head right now and not decide to get angsty...)

(Hee. I'm confident that when you do get a handle on it, it will be brilliant.

And I can see it going either way. Billy may want everyone to believe he's fluffy, but I know he's a ball of angst on the inside...)

poor Billy, we beat up on him in all ways...)

(LOL. You have to indulge your plot bunnies or they'll overtake you. It's totally not your fault.

And he's just so GOOD at it. He practically begs for it!)

(lol, yeah, idek. I think this Star Trek idea needs more planning, so hopefully that will keep it at bay while I get my big bang fic done.

he does! honestly, I think it really is Stephen's fault, for me anyway. He was such a giant ball of angst and broken...and he just needed to admit his love for Nick so they could fix their shit!! *cough* sorry, the slash got away from me...)

stephen broken

(I wish you the best with it either way. I'd apologize for egging it on, but you're the one who started with Casey and the bat'leth :)

I think I have a tendency to project angst into characters I like, but Stephen definitely does play in here. While I'm not the type that readily sees slash, Stephen was a deeply repressed character who clearly didn't know how to say or do the things he wanted to and ended up dying instead of fixing things. There was a lot to him that just never got fleshed out and he had the most baleful puppy looks sometimes that it nearly killed me.)

LOL! I'm hearing Billy loud and clear in my head and I'm also sniggering a great deal at the thought of Blank's deadly ninja combat course!

Your icon makes me happy. I'd been meaning to make a similar one :)

And yeah, I like the idea of poor Blank trying to be a ninja. That would make for one long, if vaguely amusing, day.

Thanks!

Blank as a deadly ninja would be an awesome sight :)
But Casey does have a bit of Klingon in him and of course the rest of the team would just go with the flow. Poor Rick.

Hee, yeah. Blank is full of surprises :)

I love the way the team is totally accepting of each other's eccentricities. It's really rather perfect. I'm sure Rick'll come to appreciate it someday.

Hahaha, Blanke as a ninja!

on the battlefield, asking yourself one question: is today a good day to die? Love that. So Casey.

It is a fun image all around :) And it was strangely entertaining to draw on my mostly untapped Star Trek knowledge.

Thanks!
