Primeval Drabbles

June 9th, 2011 (07:13 am)

Title:  The Anatomy of an Apology

Disclaimer: Not mine.

A/N:  Again, read over by sendintheklowns .  I owe her a lot for being so awesome.  I offered her my first born child, but since she’s heard tales of his exploits, she declined :)

Summary:  Stephen knows how to apologize. (Spoilers through 2.07)

Stephen knows how to apologize.

When he’s wrong in the lab, he offers a sheepish smile and a quick I’m sorry.  In the field, he accepts due criticism, acknowledging his fault accordingly.

When lives are on the line, Stephen does all he can to rectify the lapse, be it bullets or contrition.  When he’s hurt someone’s feelings, even unintentionally, he tries to make sure they understand, that they have a chance to say their peace and move on.

When’s he’s betrayed his best friend, Stephen throws a punch, closes a door, and trusts Cutter will know exactly what he means.

Title:  Pieces

Disclaimer:  Not mine.

A/N:  I don’t normally do drabbles without prompts, but for some reason this show motivated me in that regard.  Again, thanks to sendintheklowns  for looking this over and for enduring my endless chatter about this show (and Stephen!).  In case anyone actually reads this, I feel like noting that despite the fact that it’s a British show, this is written with American English.

Summary:  When Stephen dies, he’s entirely ripped to pieces.  (set in 2.07)

When Stephen dies, he’s ripped to pieces, torn until there’s nothing more than bloody scraps on the cold, cement floor.  The predators have been called to eat, and Stephen doesn’t resist, not that he could even if he wanted to.  It’s over in mere seconds, before he can even reconsider the choices he’s made or take another breath to apologize.  Afterward, Stephen’s hardly recognizable and anyone who’s not there would never understand how quick, how slow it all was.

When Stephen dies, he’s entirely ripped to pieces.

On the outside, behind the heavy, impenetrable door, Stephen’s not the only one.

You got to that episode? The funeral was sad and Helen especially creepy from my remembering.

stephen broken

I've watched the first two series and then clips from episodes beyond that. I am decidedly a fan of Stephen (and then Cutter) so I'm having some trepidation at trying later seasons.

Helen is creepy in that episode. And gah, poor Stephen was such a moron when it came to her, and then he went and sacrificed himself to make it all right. It still gets me.

They could have had less of Connor in the second season - he was okay in the first season with his goofy friends and have had more of Stephen in my opinion either interacting with Helen or Cutter.

So can understand your trepidation on going on to the later seasons.

I liked Connor well enough, but I agree that Stephen got the short end of the stick character wise in the second season. They didn't spend quite enough time exploring his conflicted feelings toward Helen and Cutter, making him seem a little dense in the end.

I'm just not sure the show would feel remotely the same without Stephen and Cutter (and Helen). I've been fairly spoiled for the rest of the seasons and I'm just not sure there's enough there to warrant an emotional investment.

But I'm still having fun playing with these characters for a bit :)

You should DEFINITELY do more drabbles because Pieces blew me away. Like "WOW"! I actually held my breath even knowing the result. Beautifully painful!! LOVED IT so much!

stephen cutter

I do enjoy writing drabbles from time to time. There's actually a Primeval drabble community. I should try to participate more often (even if I'm too shy to post them to the comm!).

And I'm glad you liked Pieces! It's pretty painful to think about how Stephen died but it's almost impossible not to rely on that angst for fic from time to time.
