H50 Drabble: Home For Christmas (1/1)

December 23rd, 2010 (01:07 pm)

Title:  Home for Christmas

Disclaimer:  Not mine.

A/N:  Since it is almost Christmas, I figured some fluff was in order.  This is with the prompt “miracle” from hawaii_5_0_100  and is not connected to my series.  Beta’ed again by geminigrl11 .

Summary: All in all, Danny’s apartment is a piss poor excuse for holiday cheer and Danny will need an honest to God miracle if he’s going to salvage Christmas for his daughter at all.  Tag of sorts to 1.12.

-o-

Danny’s a guy, and he’s always been a guy.  Sure, he’s learned how to play tea parties and he somehow manages to work his goofy thumbs to put on Barbie clothes, but there are some things he’s just incapable of, despite his efforts to the contrary.  For example, he can put in barrettes, but French braids elude him.

And no matter how hard he tries to make things perfect for Grace, he’s naturally stunted by the fact that he spent his childhood playing baseball and hiding dirty magazines under his mattress.  This inherent deficit is never more noticeable than at Christmas time.  Back in Jersey, he could count on his mother to pull some spectacular Grandma magic, but in Hawaii, the sun shows him for the inept bachelor that he is.

He gave up any notions of competing with Rachel and Step Stan, because it’s not a fair fight.  They’ve got a twelve-foot tree and a cook to cater Christmas day, not to mention excessive spare income to buy Grace everything she’s ever looked twice at, wrapped with bows and ribbons and custom-made designer tags, just in case Danny forgets for a second that they were loaded.

Danny?  Has 650 square feet of nothing, with a mismatched tree from the internet and two strings of lights that only work half the time.  The one box of decorations he shipped from Jersey got squished in transit, breaking half the ornaments and crumpling Grace’s handmade efforts from previous years.

All in all, Danny’s apartment is a piss poor excuse for holiday cheer and Danny will need an honest to God miracle if he’s going to salvage Christmas for his daughter at all.

He tries using garland to fill the tree out and goes through the light strands to change out the dead bulbs.  Adding the star to the top helps, but the more ornaments he puts on the thing, the more pathetic it looks as it tips precariously to the side.  Danny’s about to throw in the towel altogether when the doorbell rings.

He glances at the clock--it’s too early for Grace--and when he opens the door, somehow he’s not surprised to see Steve, Chin, Kono, and Kamekona.  Kamekona brings food, mostly things Danny doesn’t recognize, but he figures it’s the thought that counts, just for tonight.  Kono has boxes of ornaments and hooks to hang them.  Chin’s putting eggnog in the fridge, shuffling things around to hide some alcohol in the back.  Danny doesn’t even have the door closed when Steve’s lit up with a fresh string of lights plugged in.

By the time Steve asks about the Santa suit, it’s like a scene from a Charlie Brown Christmas, and his pokey little tree and his dreary apartment have transformed before his very eyes.

In the end, it’s nowhere near Rachel’s place, but when Grace comes in an hour later, it feels like home, and that’s more than any miracle Danny could have hoped for this Christmas.
