Title: Taking One For the Team

Disclaimer: I do not own Chaos.

A/N: Same old, same old. With a beta by sockie1000. This fits my sacrifice fill for hc_bingo.

Summary: They could make it, then. But only if one of them stayed behind.

-o-

Billy doesn’t have to think about it.

It’s all instinct and reaction; it comes mostly as second nature. The adrenaline is pounding through his veins and his legs are moving; they are rapidly approaching the door and the gunfire isn’t stopping.

They’re not going to make it.

But Billy knows that with a little return fire, they might have enough time. With a little distraction, his team could get out. They could close the door, get in the car, and make a clean break for it. They could make it, then.

But only if one of them stays behind.

Michael has insisted it’s all or nothing, but Michael doesn’t accept defeat. Rick is running so blindly that he doesn’t even consider the possibility of failure. Casey has his head down, his legs pumping because Casey is not capable of anything less.

Billy’s in the rear, and he’s the only one who knows what it means to quit. He’s the only one who has made the choice to walk away. He knows what it’s like to blow it. He knows what it’s like to sacrifice his entire world, his very life.

Billy knows.

He falls a few more paces behind and then turns sharply and lifts his gun. He starts firing, getting off several shots before Michael yells, “Collins! What the hell are you doing?”

Billy ducks behind a crate and looks back. “Go!” he yells back.

Rick looks confused, and Casey turns sharply, starting back.

“No!” Billy says even as gunfire pings around the doorframe where Michael has pushed Rick to safety. He pulls out, firing off several more shots before ducking back and looking at his team again. “Don’t make this sacrifice in vain!”

Casey’s face is blank with rage, but Michael grips his arm. He holds Billy’s gaze, knowing and understanding.

Some sacrifices have to be made.

Half shoving Casey out the door, Michael shuts it behind them all, leaving Billy alone.

With an angry group of smugglers, all aiming at him.

He takes a breath and feels a spike of panic. This seemed easier before; this was easier before. But now that he’s faced with it, he’s scared. Damn it, he’s terrified. He doesn’t want to die. He really doesn’t want to die.

But he will.

He thinks of his team, moving out. He thinks of their safe escape.

It’s worth it.

He closes his eyes and smiles.

It’s worth it.

Then he throws himself back into the line of fire, emptying the bullets from his clip until there’s nothing left.

-o-

When the gunfire is over, Billy is spent. Literally and figuratively. On his back, he has no energy to roll to his side, and he can feel the blood soaking his shirt and pooling on the floor under him. It hurts to breathe, and when he breathes, his chest gurgles and blood seeps into the back of his throat.

Above him, a face hovers. The sneer is unfamiliar, and his gun his kicked away. It skitters across the floor, but Billy can make no move to stop it.

He can’t do anything at all.

There are consequences to his actions. This wouldn’t have been a sacrifice if it didn’t cost him something.

If it didn’t cost him everything.

Tears sting Billy’s eyes, and he’s shaking now. A pathetic mewl escapes his throat but the man above him makes no move to offer comfort or aid. Instead, he lifts a gun and levels it at Billy head.

He’ll take this one. For his job. For his dignity. For his team.

And it’ll be the last one he ever takes.

The man cocks the gun, and Billy waits for the retort of a gunshot to be the last thing he hears.

Instead, there’s a grunt and a cry as a body hits the floor. More gunfire erupts, but farther away, and Billy cringes, and waits for the inevitable.

It never comes.

With a ragged breath, he opens his eyes. The lights are haloed, and everything seems off kilter, and he barely sees movement above his head when someone pressing down -- hard -- on his chest and stomach.

He convulses, crying out as a steady voice says, “Easy, easy.”

“We’re clear.”

“I’ve got authorities on the way.”

Michael. Casey. Rick.

But that’s impossible; they’re gone. Billy got them to safety.

Confused, he opens his eyes.

Michael is smiling at him. “You didn’t really think we’d let you do this alone, did you?”

Billy brow furrowed. “Trying to...take one for the team,” he says haltingly, his vision starting to fade around the edges.

The pressure increases, and Casey and Rick appear behind Michael.

“And it’s appreciated,” Michael says.

“Gave us time to get out and regroup,” Casey adds.

“And to contact Langley about backup support,” Rick says.

Billy looks at them each, entirely bewildered.

Michael smiles again. “You took one for the team,” he says. “Now let us take this one for you, okay?”

It’s so grandiose, Billy almost wants to laugh. He’s been shot to hell, and he’s losing blood too fast. There’s no way this rescue will work.

But that’s the thing with sacrifice. It’s usually blind and it’s usually stupid. And it’s usually not the smartest choice or the most likely.

Yet, it’s the only thing that matters.

Gritting his teeth, Billy harnesses his resolve and nods. “I think I can do that.”

“You mean, you think we can do this,” Michael corrects.

Billy grins as he hears sirens in the distance. “I’ll defer to you,” he says, words no more than a whispers. “Just this once.”

Okay, no need to bore you with overused superlatives that you know I'm thinking. Suffice it to say that sacrifice and Billy are so synonymous together and yet I love that you show Billy not wanting to die, that he's a man who values life especially those of his friends. I loved it all!!

Fave parts:

“No!” Billy says even as gunfire pings around the doorframe where Michael has pushed Rick to safety. He pulls out, firing off several more shots before ducking back and looking at his team again. “Don’t make this sacrifice in vain!”

--oh my gosh!! Just sigh!!!

On his back, he has no energy to roll to his side, and he can feel the blood soaking his shirt and pooling on the floor under him. It hurts to breathe, and when he breathes, his chest gurgles and blood seeps into the back of his throat.

--I just live for this!

billy knows

Poor Billy, thinking he's expendable. At least his team will show him otherwise :)

Thanks!
