Title: Animal Magnetism

Disclaimer: I do not own Primeval; lena7142 created Feral Stephen.

A/N: This may be the first one not from Cutter or Stephen’s POV. It also brings more characters from S3 into the mix. With thanks lena7142 and kristen_mara for their help. This is part of the Continued Adventures of Feral Stephen.

Summary: The girls contemplate the mystery that is Stephen.

-o-

Abby found that she couldn’t help but stare. It wasn’t polite, of course, but seeing as Stephen still resisted using silverware and seemed to have an aversion to washing his clothes, Abby reckoned common courtesy was mostly lost on him anyway.

That wasn’t why she stared, though. It wasn’t the way he licked his fingers after eating something juicy, noisy and obnoxious as he obliviously cleaned himself. It wasn’t the way he showed up when people were least expecting him, just looking at them as though it were completely natural. It wasn’t even that he flinched when people touched him or that he still sometimes growled deep in his throat instead of using actual words.

It was...

“Normally I don’t like beards,” Sarah said, nodding in Stephen’s direction as she sat next to Abby in the cafeteria. “But he pulls it off well.”

Abby looked at the beard. When he’d first come out of the anomaly, the facial hair had been unkempt and shaggy. The perils of shaving without a mirror. Or a razor. After a few weeks, Stephen had trimmed it neatly, and Sarah was right, he did pull it off.

Claudia sidled up to the table, edging in closer as she sat down. Though many of them had significant others, they had all discovered that sometimes a little segregated conversation was essential. “I’m actually quite fond of his hair,” she said. “I’ve never seen sunstreaks so deep or natural. Mind you, I sort of liked it longer.”

The hair was nice, Abby would admit. But it was more than that...

Sarah scoffed. “And what about that body?” she asked. “I’ve never seen a man more toned.”

“Or more comfortable with the way he looks,” Claudia agreed. “Honestly, I was rather miffed that Cutter talked him into wearing shirts more often. That was a view I certainly didn’t mind.”

“For a body like that, I don’t think I’d mind spending the better part of a decade in the Permian,” Sarah said.

“And he has that hunter vibe going on,” Claudia added enthusiastically.

“You should see him in the field,” Sarah rejoined. “He can track anything over any terrain. Competence is sexy.”

Claudia hummed in agreement.

Abby inclined her head, still watching him as Stephen tried not to look out of place while Connor told some undoubtedly ridiculous story. Competence was sexy. So was intelligence and well-toned muscles and...

“And his eyes,” Sarah said. “So blue!”

Claudia made a small face. “But they do seem to be always watching you.”

Sarah waved her hand in the air. “I’m sure we could find ways to distract him from that.”

Claudia blushed. “I’m taken, thank you very much,” she said.

“I’m not,” Sarah said. “Besides, there’s no crime in looking. Right, Abby?”

“Hm?” she asked, startling as she remembered she was actually part of this conversation.

Sarah and Claudia laughed.

“You’re more smitten than I am,” Sarah said.

“We won’t rat you out to Connor, though,” Claudia said.

Abby felt her cheeks get hot. “I’m just trying to figure out what it is about him that is so compelling...” she said, eyeing Stephen thoughtfully. He was almost done with his meal, frowning as he seemed to listen to Cutter talk over Connor. In some ways, he was the Stephen she remembered -- and more. He had the look, some of the mannerisms. A little of the humor, some of the appeal. Back when they’d first met, she remembered thinking Stephen might have been someone she could have fancied. At least, before she’d realized Connor was her better match, and she didn’t regret that.

But watching Stephen, there was still something...

“His vulnerability,” Claudia concluded. “He’s this strong hunter, perfectly capable of survival but with no social skills whatsoever. We want to fix our men.”

Sarah shook her head. “His arse,” she concluded. “And his abs. He could market it: how to get in shape, Permian-style.”

Abby’s brow furrowed, eyes narrowing. Suddenly, across the room, Stephen tensed.

Then she realized what it was. That difference she knew but couldn’t quite grasp.

“Animal magnetism,” she said, by way of revelation.

Just that moment, Stephen turned, eyes landing on Abby, zeroed in with uncanny clarity.

Sarah burst into laughter and Claudia turned away, smothering a smile. For her part, Abby just smiled back at him, waving slightly.

Stephen’s eyes narrowed, and his face twisted into a grimace before he looked back to Cutter.

“Definitely animal magnetism,” Abby said again, while Claudia and Sarah giggled next to her. And if Abby had to keep staring, even as he finished his lunch and walked out in those nicely fitted jeans, she reckoned no one else would blame her.

LOL.
Poor Stephen; not only does he have to re-figure out how to react in polite society, but he has to handle being ogled by every female within eyeshot...

Mmmm. Stephen is a lovely image, especially a slightly more toned and wiry feral version. That man is just more attractive than he has a right to be.

Thanks :)

It is a very important discussion. One of the most important ever. Which is why we spend so much time on it :)

Thanks!
