Title: Team Bonding

Disclaimer: I do not own Primeval. Feral Stephen belongs to lena7142.

A/N: This is part of the Continued Adventures of Feral Stephen. Always, thanks to lena7142. It’s starting to feel redundant to say, but she really is amazing and she makes my life so much better by existing :) She beta’ed this fic, but I messed with it a lot afterward, so mistakes are my own.

Summary: Stephen joins the team at the ARC.

-o-

Stephen was dressed, his hair was trimmed and his beard was kept. He looked like a reasonably normal member of society.

Appearances, however, could be deceiving. Because no matter how he looked, Stephen was still...different.

Not that that had to be a bad thing. Really, Stephen just needed experience, more time with people. He’d still spent most of his life in the modern age; the rest would come back to him sooner or later.

At least, that was what Cutter had told Lester when he announced that Stephen was ready to come to work. Stephen's unique skill set made him excessively qualified, and though Lester complained a great deal, he still found the idea of getting Stephen's paperwork in order for the real world more daunting than the idea of a half-feral man running around under government authorization.

Besides, Cutter had promised to monitor Stephen and do his best to avert potential disaster. Stephen would be an asset, Cutter had assured him. Cutter just hoped that Stephen’s transition to the group setting wouldn’t prove him wrong.

Fortunately for everyone, the first calls were easy, which really was for the best. Stephen wasn’t the only one who needed to acclimate to the new dynamic. Even Cutter found that his absence from this timeline had changed things just enough to make everything different, and Becker’s hardline presence was still somewhat abrasive to Cutter’s intuitive leadership methods.

In all, the team was still uncertain in its interactions, even though every one of them was skilled and capable. They always got the job done, despite a few hiccups along the way. Abby was too tentative, and Connor was overzealous and awkward. Becker seemed frustrated more often than not because no one seemed to listen to him at all. For his part, Stephen was sometimes helpful but in inexplicable ways, and other times he was no more helpful than the creatures they were corralling.

Still, by the time they got a call about a truly dangerous predator, everyone was at least comfortable around each other and they made for a moderately effective group.

Or so he'd thought.

It was a raptor in an office park. Special forces had cleared the area, and Cutter's team had got the creature sequestered in the cafeteria, where it was currently mucking through dinner scraps and throwing itself at doors in an attempt to flee. Becker had produced a map of the building, and Cutter found himself standing over it, nursing a headache.

He could handle danger. He could cope with near-death. But the tedium of planning with a special forces tight ass was almost too much.

"So if we charge at it this way, we can back it toward the corner and use the guns--"

"With tranquilizers?" Abby interjected.

"First assault, yes," Becker agreed.

"We don't want to kill it," Cutter reminded him.

"Yes, and we don't want anyone to die either," Becker retorted.

"Seems like maybe we can find a middle ground," Connor suggested.

"We don't need a middle ground," Cutter said. "But we need to act quickly before we aggravate it."

Becker raised an eyebrow. "Like it's not already."

Stephen snorted.

Looking up, Cutter then realized that Stephen wasn't standing around the map. He wasn't even close to them. He was leaned against the wall, using his knife to pick at his fingernails in an apparent state of boredom.

"Something you wish to add?" Becker asked tersely.

Stephen shrugged.

"We could use your experience," Cutter suggested, a bit more conciliatory. Stephen often responded in hostility to aggression, so Cutter had learned to pose suggestions, not orders, if he wanted to have any sway whatsoever.

This at least warranted a look from Stephen. But his lips turned down into a scowl and he grunted.

That was a clear sign not to push the topic. Stephen's disagreeability was one of the hardest things to get used to, but Cutter had come to appreciate the other man's simplistic methods of communication. His grunts all had meaning, and at this moment, Stephen thought they were wasting time.

Which, Cutter reckoned, they might be, though he saw no way around it.

"It is your job, you know," Becker reminded him.

Stephen looked toward him and glowered. He got up off the wall slowly and lingered. Then he promptly turned on his heel and disappeared out the door without a word.

"He's leaving?" Abby asked.

"Maybe he had to go to the bathroom," Connor suggested. "He's at least going in the toilets again."

"Never mind," Becker said, his attention back on the map. "I'm still thinking we want to go straight in."

Cutter sighed, looking back at the layout. "I just think the risk of confrontation is too high," he said. "These creatures are dangerous. We don't want anyone to get too close or it could be disastrous."

"Uh, Cutter?" Connor said.

Cutter sighed. "Is it important?"

Connor nodded, staring wide eyed through the window down to the cafeteria below. Cutter followed his line of vision, and then his stomach went cold. "Bloody hell."

Becker straightened, looking down, face paling slightly. "What is he doing?" he asked -- demanded really.

Abby gasped, and Connor gaped. Because there, down below, Stephen had circumvented the barricades and entered the cafeteria. Now, with his knife tucked away and arms loose at his sides, the man was approaching the raptor, step by cautious step.

Worse still, the beast could clearly see Stephen, standing eerily still as it watched his steady approach. Then, when the two were a mere few metres from each other, Stephen stopped.

Becker was on his radio. "We need a team in position, now!" he called.

Cutter was going to shake his head, but it was too late. It didn't matter. Because as the raptor tensed, ready to strike, Stephen lunged first.

The two bodies collided mid-air, tumbling to the floor. There was a flurry of activity as Stephen hit the ground and rolled. The raptor followed and attacked but Stephen ducked it, leaping after it and landing on its back. The thing squawked -- a primal, angry noise -- but Stephen bared down on its neck, squeezing hard in what looked like a choke hold.

Even Becker had to stop, mouth still open with the radio held up.

Because Stephen was choking out a raptor.

Then the thing went limp, and Stephen let it go, quickly pulling rope out of his pocket. Hastily, he tied the thing's jaws shut before roping its feet together and tying off strong, square knots.

By the time Cutter and the others got down there, Stephen was lounging against the wall again, back to cleaning his fingernails with his knife. There were a series of bloody cuts on his forearm, and his jeans were ripped, but he seemed otherwise unharmed. The raptor was awake and twitching, clearly furious at its predicament.

Connor skidded inside, laughing. "Did you see that!" he exclaimed. "That was awesome!"

Abby moved closer, checking the animal carefully, giving Stephen a cautious glance as she passed.

Becker just gaped, gun still in hand. He stared at the raptor. He stared at Stephen. "We have guns, you know," he said finally.

Stephen looked up, disinterested. "Then use them next time."

Connor laughed, slapping his knee in utter joy, while Becker stared, still dumbstruck.

For his part, Cutter just had to stand there and smirk. He was starting to like this Stephen more and more with each passing day.

All in all, they were an unconventional and unlikely group, but here they were. Not like Cutter had envisioned, but still something special.

Maybe there was hope for this team after all.

Oh, I love it!

"It is your job, you know,"
As soon as Becker said that, I just KNEW Stephen was going to take things into his own hands... *g*

"We have guns, you know," he said finally.
Stephen looked up, disinterested. "Then use them next time."
Zing. Point to Stephen.

I really like the way the team's dynamic is also being analysed with the outsider Stephen among them.

I hope you have many more bunnies for this 'verse!

Yes, I like this Stephen more and more as well! Seeing the dynamics of the group through Cutter's eyes is very interesting.

Old Fashioned Stephen

Eeek and brill! Love how the team is trying to adapt, and Stephen's song is definitely "I Did It My Way". Interesting parallels between him & Helen with the lounging back with the knife.

You can take the boy out of the feral but you can't take the feral out of the boy. Hee - he's better value than Tarzan, even if he has ditched the loincloth.

**But the tedium of planning with a special forces tight ass was almost too much.**

*falls about laughing* But it IS a very lovely one ;)

**"He's at least going in the toilets again."**

I love sequels, but I don't think I need to know more about THAT *G*

Yeah, the parallel with Helen wasn't quite intentional, although I think there's a certain coldness I think they both developed from having to survive. Though Helen lost all of her humanity; Stephen clearly still retained his :)

Heh. I think I wrote something more about the toilets in a fic somewhere, but I can't totally recall now :) We'll find out!

Thanks!

Poor Becker! Stephen definitely wins that one. Maybe Stephen needs to start training him. And lol at Connors bathroom comment.
Great addition to the series.

Anomaly - Stephen

"Maybe he had to go to the bathroom," Connor suggested. "He's at least going in the toilets again."

*howls laughing* I might be the only one around here who'd like to see that out-take. *g*

Feral STephen is a brilliant character, grunts and all.

This was a great look at the team trying - and not quite sicceeding - to works as a team.
