Title:  A Risk Worth Taking

Disclaimer:  Not mine.

A/N:  Based on the prompt Fay remembers the honeymoon from eviinsanemonkey .  Unbeta’ed with heavy elements of Michael/Fay.

Summary:  She remembers thinking, if this is a risk, then it’s a risk worth taking.

-o-

She remembers that it was her idea.

Michael is damn near brilliant, and he’d fallen for her quickly, but he has always been a CIA agent, through and through.  Dating had been fun and casual, but he had been tentative to make a commitment to her, knowing the nature of his job.  Family, he used to say, can be hard to prioritize with top secret missions on the line.

She had worked in the Agency long enough to understand his fears.  She knew about operatives who had died in the field; been to funerals with grieving widows who could never understand just how it all went wrong.

She didn’t care.

She loved Michael and everything about him.  She could imagine a life without him, and she didn’t like it.  He made her feel alive; made her feel special.  He regarded her like a high priority asset, and she had never felt more complete than in his arms.

“Marry me,” she’d breathed to him one night.  They were in his apartment, small and orderly.  Her clothes were spread haphazardly across the floor as she was perched in his lap.  She leaned in, brushing her lips against his cheek.  “Marry me.”

He was too close to back away and as he nuzzled her neck, he shook his head.  “You know that’s a bad idea,” he said.

She traced a line of kisses down his cheek and neck, running her hands over his chest.  “Do you love me?” she asked.

He groaned a little, body moving instinctively closer.  “You know I do.”

“Then the mistake’s already made,” she told him plainly.  She sat up, pausing long enough to look at him.  “You can’t plan everything.  You didn’t plan love.  We don’t need to plan our life.  We just need to be, in the moment, just like we are.  Completely and totally in love.”

She held his gaze for a long moment before he pulled her close again, turning her onto her back and landing on top of her.  “Are you sure about this?” he asked.

Her eyes twinkled and she kissed him again.  “I’m sure.”

The next day, she’d called in a week of vacation despite the director’s stronger objections.  She jumped on a plane with Michael to Paris.  They got married in a small chapel by a minister who barely spoke English.  They laughed through their vows and stopped at the first bakery they saw for cake afterward.  Fay didn’t have a wedding dress, and they couldn’t afford anything from the real shops downtown, but they found something off beat in the fashion district.  It was an original; deep and blue, hugging her curves in all the right ways.

She remembers feeling beautiful and invincible; in love.

Michael took her to restaurants where they ordered food they could barely identify.  They took long walks at night and slept late in the mornings.  Michael went out to buy her breakfast, always coming back with a token.  A statue of the Eiffel Tower with her eggs.  A small bottle of perfume to accompany her crepes.  Keepsakes she’s still kept with her, in the box under her bed where she knows Michael doesn’t dare check even as he keeps tabs on her since the divorce.

She remembers thinking, if this is a risk, then it’s a risk worth taking.

Years later, she understands that Michael was probably right.  With the missions, the lies, the paranoia, their marriage had ended soon after it began, only with bitterness where there used to be passion.  In the spy game, love is just one part, and no matter how committed Michael was, she could never be the most important thing as long as he served his country first.

Still, as she fingers the small bottle of perfume, she still thinks maybe she was right, too.

AWWWW! This is sweeet and a good inside look at what must have been going through Fay's mind in the last episode. Liked it!

Thanks! I really loved Michael's boyishness around Fay last episode, and her attempts to deflect it even when you could tell she still felt something, too.

I am really rather amused at how much romance you have me writing :) So I'm glad you like it!

(Okay, I'm giving in with my h/c prompt: Casey performing field surgery. If Billy is the recipient, I'd love you even more.)

lol. I'm kind of a sucker for romance.

(ooooooh this shall be interesting...if tricky. And I should pry ask this now, just in case, but do you mind if it gets a little slashy? It pry won't, but just in case...)

(Hopefully not too tricky...if it is, I can pick something else. I really prefer gen, but have enjoyed things with the pre-slash label. My mind just tends to see friendships, not romance, unless it's explicit on screen. I know that makes me somewhat difficult!)

(Nah, not too tricky :) Okay, It pry won't be slashy at all, but sometimes plots get away from me, heh. If it starts to get too slashy, I can always do another story for the prompt)

This is lovely! I'm intrigued by the relationship between them, and this fic really echoes what we see on the screen.

I didn't think much of their dynamic in the earlier aired eps, but with Michael's obvious enthusiasm toward her in the eps aired recently, I've become more intrigued with their backstory.

Thanks :)

Awww, I love this backstory.

In the spy game, love is just one part, and no matter how committed Michael was, she could never be first as long as he served his country first. Very strong line. Says it all.

It's hard not to feel bad for Fay--there's certainly still something between her and Michael but no matter how sweet Michael can be, it's pretty clear he'd have issues as a husband.

Thanks :)
